isWith the beautiful Martinborough just moments away with the friendly bar and cafe scene, making you feel like a local. Also famous for its 20-odd vineyards, country markets and fairs, vineyard lunches and events such as Toast Martinborough and Around the Vines.
Fetherston, Greytown and Carterton are just a short drive beyond that for antiques, secondhand shops, cafes and restaurants and don't forget the Greytown's Festival of Christmas in July. Just 10 minutes south of Waihora is The Land Girl Pirinoa Coffee House - a perfect place to stop for great coffee on your way to Cape Palliser or Lake Ferry. The Pirinoa Store is also well stocked if you need any supplies. |
Further South:
The Ngawi fishing village, famous for TV commercials, provides the full rural experience of watching the old bulldozers getting boats in and out of the sea.
Cape Palliser Lighthouse is well worth a visit and good climb up the 254 steps to view a dramatic seascape, and on the drive there you will see colonies of NZ fur seals that frequent the coastline. There are great surfing, diving and fishing spots at Ningnong, Ngawi and Lake Ferry. This largely untouched part of the Wairarapa is pretty special. |
